There are many benefits to using fabric pots over traditional styles of pots:
Air Pruning
Fabric pots encourage horizontal and vertical root growth. Unlike conventional plastic pots, when roots reach the wall of a fabric pot, they are ‘air pruned’. This means the root stops growing and does not circle the inside of the pot, avoiding becoming pot bound. Instead, the plant focuses its energy on growing new feeder roots, resulting in a dense, healthy root system.
Root Zone Aeration
Fabric pots allow air to move freely from outside the pot, through the pot wall, and directly to the root zone. This ensures oxygen reaches the roots from all sides, allowing them to breathe and promoting thriving beneficial microbes. Additionally, fabric pots prevent heat absorption (as seen with plastic or terracotta pots), which can cause sweating and stress to the plant. The breathable fabric effectively cools the root ball, working similarly to evaporative cooling.
Prevents Over Watering
Overwatering is a common issue for potted plants. Fabric pots allow free drainage through both the bottom and the sides, making it nearly impossible to overwater.
Great for Hydroponics
Fabric pots are versatile for hydroponic systems. They can be top watered or used in flood and drain (ebb & flow) systems, allowing nutrients to be absorbed through the pot from all sides.
Portability
Fabric pots are highly portable, just like traditional pots. They are lightweight and easy to move. Additionally, they come flat-packed, eliminating the need to handle bulky stacks of plastic pots.
Additional Features
- Larger Sizes: Fabric pots in 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, and 50-litre sizes come with carry handles and a wire rim. The wire rim self-supports the pot, keeping it open and making it easier to add growing media.
- Fabric Thickness: 350 g/m² for durability and performance.
